For the first time in 10 years the water in my 50 gallon aquarium turned green after trying different fish foods. Just a few days of changing the water and filter pads and the floating algae are back. I googled the issue and decided to try the UV light option. I ordered the 7w model as it is much shorter than the 11w model and fits in my Tetra Whisper filter. Under the light of the WU, the cloudy water became less cloudy after two days. After 5 days the water became crystal clear. I now have a UV light on a timer so it only runs a few hours a day. It's been a few weeks and the water is still crystal clear. It works out!
