Review on Hoodman HGEC Glasses HoodEYE Eyecup by Robert Yates

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A must for spectacle wearers, but poorly made and not very flexible.

First off, HGEC is for Hoodman's "hoodeye" system, and that's part of the problem. The hoodeye is around $20 per model (they make several models for different CANON or NIKON DSLRs) and the HGEC eyecup is around another $10. Not very expensive, but not very "cheap" either. Essentially, the Hoodeye system was designed to replace your current eyepiece with an oval designed specifically for your eye. The HGEC model is a larger version designed to be worn with glasses. The connection is simple: you first remove the existing eyepiece and replace it with a dome eyepiece, after which the original eyepiece is replaced with a round eyepiece. Place a rubber HGEC over this circle and you're done (you can get an idea by looking at the photo). Because it's a circle, you can rotate the HGEC to shoot horizontally or vertically. HGEC is designed for photographers who wear glasses - the (rubber material) eyecup "covers" your glasses, blocking any extra light and allowing you to see better. through the viewfinder. The problem is that the tires are not very good. Rotate the eyecup for horizontal/vertical use, or try storing it (HGEC makes it harder because it sticks out a bit and you don't want the camera's weight resting on it) - either will cause a problem. to eventually rip (I have had 3 rips so far, each of which requires you to buy a new one - I only booked extras expecting it to rip again as it is a special item and not easy to find in the short term). Thanks to that, it works great - it's expensive, not the highest quality, but it does the job and gives photographers a lot more options. Just make sure you also buy a "hood" for your camera model.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
