TL;DR: Fantastic headphones when powered by a competent source. If you're a picky listener who likes closed backs, go for it; You will not regret it! Long form: I've had the DT1770 Pro for over a year now. The 1770s are exceptional: very comfortable, with good build quality, but what really stands out is the excellent sound (clear, high definition, inaudible distortion, no overly boosted bass, spatial) - but to achieve these outstanding qualities you have to make them . with really good components: a high quality DAC and a full range amplifier to really make them sing. After reading various reviews here and elsewhere I settled on the 3rd Gen T5. About the DT1770 Pro: Even better workmanship, better comfort; but what really counts is the sound. After 24 hours of burning, I listened to them back-to-back with high-resolution recordings (Chesky!) through the same superb DAC/amp. The T5 is a significant evolution of the DT1770 Pro. Greater clarity, depth and surround sound (*especially* with the earcup closed). Conclusion: Very good headphones in general: sound, quality, comfort. For me, T5 is better than DT1770. But is the T5 worth the $400 price increase over the DT1770 pros? Unless you're a very picky and focused listener, this is up for debate. Will I keep these T5s? Absolutely!
