Review on Focal Aria 906 Black High Gloss Bookshelf Speakers (Pair) – Enhanced SEO by Jennifer Rogers

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good buttery sound perfect for music in a relatively large case

I bought a pair of these Focal Aria 906s from an aftermarket owned by a great musician who upgraded to a Magnepan 1.7i and have a mini for comparison in my living room has performed . I've compared them to my Paradigm Signature S1 beryllium dome tweeters and my KEF LS50s as shown in the picture. The Focals are bigger than any other bookshelf I've ever owned so I was immediately taken aback by the sheer amount of bass they produce and I have two Dynamo 700 subwoofers! With them, you're unlikely to need a subwoofer, if at all. This is a subjective rating, so I'm comparing these speakers to my Marantz 5011 receiver based on music, TV and movies: For TV, the Focals were the worst of the three. The dialogues have a certain drone that I didn't like. If you don't have a center channel speaker, this isn't the best option for TV-only use. In my opinion, KEF were the clearest in dialogue, followed by Paradigms. However, KEFs have a directional sound. So if you have a large living room, you might want to consider more open speakers. For movies I prefer Focals over KEF and Paradigms were first. You would miss the openness of dims in the other two. As for the music that was most important to me, I came to the conclusion that they are all good at different genres of music. KEF is a winner when it comes to vocals, both male and female. The Paradigms are best for complex, multi-instrumental and classical music, so I think they're better separated in a way. Focals are best for pop, alternative and rock and have a nice soundstage. My friend and I did a blind test and picked different speakers as the best choice for different songs. I've read before that the Focal Aria 906 have a bright sound, but I didn't find them harsh or bright at all. . Anyway, they are very oily! Both KEF and Paradigm are much brighter with less bass. I sometimes found the bass to be too strong on the Focals, but this is easily remedied with the right tuning. In fact, I liked the Focals so much that I ordered a couple of refurbished 905s just to compare and see if they were better with vocals but less bass. I'll write a review of the 905s when I get them later. These Focals are very good speakers and given the occasional sale or aftermarket price tag you can't go wrong with them. They're great for bass-heavy music, and their only downside, in my opinion, is their sheer size. With three speakers tested, I concluded that all speakers should perform very well in the sub-2K category with slight differences, and each performs better in one area or another. As with all types of audio, people like different sound signatures, so try these focals the next time you listen. my 906 and it's a "really" tough choice! The Focal 905 has very good bass and crisp highs, and it's hard to pick a winner between the two. I've gone back and forth with the same amp many times and they are very close. You'd be happy with either, but if you want to know the subtle differences, here we go: the Aria 906's low end has more of a full-body feel, while the 905 has a more audible effect with bass. I think the 906 bass is more refined, buttery and mixed. However, if you cross the 905s, they are just as good! Without a subwoofer and if you can handle a larger speaker, go for the 906. If you already have a subwoofer, there's a small benefit to the slightly larger soundstage the 906 produces, but it's not too obvious. All in all Focal has done a really good job with the Aria line and it is not surprising that they use the same woofer materials (flax) in the new Kanta series with their amazing beryllium tweeters and the Electra line completely drop. I think now is the time to get the Electra 1008 or 1028 if you prefer the W sandwich woofer to sound better.
