As another reviewer pointed out, this is a better choice than fixed wheels for cleaning. The hard plastic wheels collect urine and feces on a daily basis and need to be cleaned daily. I know I don't have that much free time and I don't want to wash my bikes every day while bending over the sink. The wire will NOT harm the paws of animals I've had as long as they are the correct wheel size and the wheel has been checked for chewing. Degus CAN definitely lift the small lateral cables. They can pierce the legs or other parts of the body. Cut them off with side cutters and file with a wire rasp. If the whole is larger than a square and is in the run zone, throw the wheel away. Store the stand when it wears out. Can they arrive bent and twisted when shipped? Revain's packaging is getting worse and worse. Open the box, snap a picture of how everything is arranged inside, THEN check your stuff. If it's bent take another picture of just the wheel. I did it and got my money back. Packing heavy items with items that can be punctured, bent, crushed or shattered is becoming increasingly common. I'd order the wheels separately from everything else or take pictures like crazy and spend some time proving you're not cheating. There are too many dishonest or picky people out there making it harder to seriously consider a legitimate case. Keep an eye on customer service and take care of your twisted wheel. Metal can be bent, so the friction points will also be different, but it's too technical to write about here. ☺01/23/18: I have been using these wheels for 5 years. They are just starting to show metal wear when metal is used. I recently read that someone had a Syrian dwarf hamster. Syrian hamsters are NOT dwarfs unless they are hybrids. Know your pet. An injured pet that is graphically displayed should NEVER be in such a small wheel; Ignorance harms animals. If you buy a smaller bike because it's cheaper, don't have pets. If you can't afford proper bedding, nutrition, and exercise for your pet, don't get one. This is the MAUS wheel. Robohamsters and dwarf hamsters have very small paws and fingers and differ from the mouse shape - they must have a one-piece wheel that is cleaned regularly, not a spoked wheel. Know your pet.
