Review on Osprey Transporter Laptop Backpack in Haybale Shade by Rita Lenora

A unique shape that unfortunately just doesn't work

Context: College student with a bunch of gadgets in his bag (laptop, iPad, external keyboard, some books and stationery) I'm from a pixel , which I just loved so when I decided to switch to a new bag I had no hesitation in buying another bag from Osprey. The Transporter zip in particular caught my eye with its unique shape. But unfortunately when I received the bag, its unique shape led to failure. But first the good side. 1. I liked the multiple components on the outside and top of the bag. It's great that Osprey made the zippers even more subtle so people don't know if they intend to steal your stuff. 2. Outer Material. It's great that it's waterproof, but I'm not sure the material will stand up to a lot of creases (explained below). 3. Looks great! BUT only if it's full to the brim! Which brings me to the disadvantages of the bag. Poor 1. Due to the unique shape, the bag must be filled to the brim to keep the shape intact. I now assumed this wouldn't happen before ordering as I figured the materials would be stiff enough for the shape to hold. a. Unfortunately it isn't. So what happens is that if there are not enough items in the bag, the bag will collapse by itself. And believe me, filling this bag isn't easy. It's a good 30 litres, which means you really need to pour in a lot of stuff to keep it in shape. b. Why is that bad? I. Well first of all its aesthetic is ugly and weird, like an ugly baby (as seen in my pictures). ii. Second, due to the fact that the bag folds itself, there seem to be a lot of creases in the outer material. Now based on the material I'm pretty sure it won't hold up creases for the next 3 years and will likely tear. This is probably not a good idea for Osprey as many people will be returning their items under warranty for the foreseeable future. 2. Laptop sleeve internal design. Looks like they changed the design between their Pixel and this tote. Previously, the sleeve was part of the overall bag component in its pixel. But for their top zip van, they seem to have separated that. What happens then is that the main part of the bag has a hollow bottom (like a cave) which only makes the bag uncomfortable when folding documents. Documents can't lie flat in the bag (see video) and I just don't feel safe putting my stuff (like a keyboard) in it because it could break. I bought the bag in the US but have since left the country. I will be in touch with Osprey to see if they can arrange some form of return (if Osprey Customer Service is reading this please contact me if possible). All in all I'm rather disappointed. 2 stars because this is Osprey and I trust their products. Maybe this new product was a one-time design flaw, or it just doesn't fit my needs. TLDR: This bag is only for those who plan to fill it to the brim. Otherwise the shape will probably not hold. And mind you, this is a huge 30 liter bag, so you'd better pack a few things in it.
