Panel size is convenient to use. They snap together (and can be separated) fairly easily unless you're arthritic or have other issues with your hands/fingers - no problem, I've tried just edging some of them, mostly at odd angles (because whose garden is a square with perfectly spaced plants/size?) and they fit together perfectly. They're fairly light, maybe they can explode when out in the open, and some people mention that animals move them - secure them with landscape clamps, stakes, or one of the supports that support the ring around your heavy peonies. I've also tried turning some of them upside down and gently wiggling my teeth in the mulch. Cats can walk on it, but they cannot dig in. My advice to anyone still struggling with cats using the litter box or trying to get them out of the way: you probably have nowhere else to go - try to provide the best space for them and for you. Also, they aren't very flexible and don't feel incredibly strong (don't walk on them!). I was able to lay out an inexpensive 2 inch wire mesh and cover it with a VERY thin layer of mulch. Between these two choices, the two outdoor cats we have (and their friends next door) are no longer trying to use the flower beds as a toilet.
