Review on Idea Waterproof Motorcycle Gear Indicator LED Display For Yamaha (Green) by Robert Yates

Surprisingly, the installation on the Yamaha FZ6R

First, let's end this part of the discussion right away: Yes, this is a 100% fake GIpro X type gear indicator. The previous version, not the new G2 version. But less than half the price. Also the instructions are obviously GIpro instructions, but search with Ctrl+F and replace "GIpro" with "Idea". It even mentions "SpeedoHealer", a GIpro product. So you're buying a clone, kids. If you're worried about ethics, pay for the original. It's not like this. It may or may not use the same internals and may be made by the factory that contracted the contract to make the original. Who can tell? My example works fine. I installed it on a 2015 Yamaha FZ6R using the wiring diagram at the end of the official service manual. Four cables are required for installation: The unit is supplied with a male and female connector which places it in line with the speed sensor cable coming from the gearbox. This plug is located under the tank, in the rearmost of the two large rubber boots. The plugs are easy to spot as they are the only two on the entire bike that look exactly like the ones on this gear indicator. The third wire, green and black, goes to the crankshaft position sensor wire, which is conveniently housed in another large rubber boot in the same spot, right at the front, and is a yellowish-green square sleeve with two wires coming out of it. The instructions say to use "natural or black wire", not gray wire. In my example, the correct wire was white (next to grey). The fourth wire can be connected to any switched 12v power wire and I followed the instructions in the manual and used the positive wire from the rear brake light switch (located just above the crankcase and going to the rear brake light switch). The mention of the "vampire" cords going for the included wires is utterly ridiculous. The ones I bought in a big old bucket at Harbor Freight for $2 were better - so don't use them, just get the real ones from an auto parts store or something. A couple of small zip ties are also provided, of extremely dubious quality, which I don't see as a problem as there is virtually nothing to secure the zip tie between the suspension and steering wheel on the FZ6R. So I glued my wire to the inside of the frame tube instead. As always, stay stylish. I was also surprised that they include an extra magic wand on the "lens" for the front of the indicator when you press an F a few years later. Have fun remembering where you put it. The broadcast indicator works exactly as described. This is a "universal" type that calculates your current gear based on a 1:1 ratio between wheel speed and engine speed. I found it quick and accurate if you listen to the instructions which clearly state that an accurate gear will only be read when the bike is in motion and the clutch is fully disengaged. You can "trick" it by having it display the wrong gear (or more commonly no gear), slipping the clutch on purpose at high speed, upshifting while stationary (in which case it corrects while driving) or presumably in the Air . Even the burnout won't fool it as it gets your wheel speed from the countershaft pinion gear. I received the red model and have no problem reading it in direct sunlight. (There's no orange model that comes close to the stock FZ6 dash lights.) I only gave stars for the absolutely horrible built-in parts and obviously copied instructions that were particularly useless in showing me where to put the correct cables on my bike find. . .

Pros
  • wasn't that difficult. Solid construction
Cons
  • Damaged
