Pleasantly surprised

I was uncomfortable ordering the linens without being able to touch them first to check the "plastic" feel and when I first received them I was a little dismayed to realize that she actually felt about the above. synthetic and not what I wanted. The shape was also very confusing and I didn't understand how to put it on my new mattress. However, I proceeded with the cover as I wanted immediate protection for my new (and expensive) purchase. The cover was thin (but not too thin) and looked well stitched. Wow - I was surprised! The lid slipped off easier than I expected. I have a very thick (15ft) king-size mattress, so two people put it on the bed. The fit was excellent - not sure I would recommend this product for a much thinner mattress as it feels like there is excess fabric to manage. The zipper is quite narrow and can get caught in the fabric, so take your time to close it. This zipper has no velcro. When I first laid it on my bed it felt a bit like a vinyl based product, but after doing more research you will need to look into this type of fabric if you want allergen and insect repellent properties. Again I wasn't thrilled as I thought the cover might be loud but at this point I was ready. I did not wash this cover prior to installation - it had no odor when it came out of the box and I didn't want to compromise the barrier properties. Another surprise! I covered it with a mattress topper with a cotton topper and cotton sheets (prewashed). I've been sleeping wrinkle free for a week now. There is no sound coming from the cover and the mattress topper and sheets have not moved at all. I move around a bit in my sleep and haven't had any problems. I also sleep "hot" and have had no issues with rising sleeping surface temperatures. I can't speak for insect repellent (and hopefully never need to) but I've had no issues with odor or dust from the mattress itself. I'm an avid reader of pre-production reviews and live in a hot climate where my air conditioning is 8-10 months of the year at 76 degrees. My mattress is a mixture of mattress topper and foam rubber.
