Sangean WE-11 vs Tivoli Model One

Owned Tivoli for over 5 years. Tivoli sounds good when new. It has a warm, rich sound. Sounds better than Sangean on AM talk stations. Tivoli is true analog tuning. It's loud and the tuner doesn't drift well. The tuner drifts for a few minutes and it drifts quite a bit. I have to turn the knob back and forth at almost 10MHz to get the signal back. Noisy tuning between stations. It looks like the tuner potentiometer is dirty, but it's not the cleanable type. He needs to be replaced, which is more drama than I'd like. I got the WR-11SE for my birthday. I asked him to replace Tivoli due to the above issues. Sangean appears to be using a PLL setup. The tuner is quiet between stations and locks in firmly when it finds a good signal. The display is more linear than a clock face and is backlit, making the Sangean display much easier to read than the Tivoli display. The Sangean has a warmer sound with more powerful bass than the Tivoli. This makes the Sangean sound better than the Tivoli for FM music. I've been listening to AM Talk on Sangean and it sounds clean and clear. The Sangean sounds a bit warmer and tighter than the Tivoli. Other reviews can tell you all the specs etc. The Sangean costs about double (or less!) the Tivoli. They buy the Tivoli name and the Henry Kloss name, but the radio is worse in my opinion. I have several other Sangean radios and they are all high quality. Sangean has always been a Chinese company. Their radios have always been made in China. Since Sangean was originally founded in China and is NOT a new company built on stealing and counterfeiting designs from other companies, it is one of the few Chinese companies that actually manufactures high quality products. I've been buying and using Sangean radios since the 1990's and have never had a marriage. They were all very good radios. Sangean is qualitatively equivalent to Panasonic and Sony. I definitely recommend this radio over the Tivoli Model One.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors

The Sangean sounds a bit muffled almost like heavy noise reduction is being applied to the signal
