When I got a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms I fell in love with them. Phenomenal clarity, deep booming bass and a great-sounding V-curve. When I got the Beyerdynamic DT 880 Premium 600 Ohm, I fell in love with it too. Also slightly better clarity than the 770-80 but with more natural bass and better soundstage. I've been telling myself that audiophile gear is a country of falling returns, it just isn't getting any better. Then I bought a DT-1770. My love of the 770s got me salivating in the 1770s because I wanted to hear the amazing successors that would bring that legacy to Tesla drivers. And surprisingly, I found that the yields didn't decrease. Closed-back headphones with amazing clarity - in many cases they're not much better than the 880s in terms of clarity, but then you'll find a song that just blows your mind. This first happened to me during the Outlander opening The Skye Boat Song (Extended), which sounds noticeably better on the 1770s than any other properly EQ headphones I've had. They have a remarkably neutral sound that I didn't think needed an equalizer. I can't say I've experienced this before! This means bass can sound very muffled if you're used to the usual V-shaped signature. That doesn't mean they're incapable, though: when the source asks for bass, it has something to give, and this doesn't distort the rest of the frequencies. The soundstage isn't quite comparable to the open 880's, but closer than I thought with closed headphones. One unexpected thing I found is that despite being 250 ohms of resistance, they are easy to control. After pulling them out of my O2/ODAC, I curiously popped them into my Lumia 950 and was able to get acceptable volume and bass. Their clarity suggests flaws in your source - I heard the hissing fairly easily, but it's hardly the cans' fault. So let's talk about the cons. Weight and downforce are one thing. They're significantly heavier and stiffer than the 880s, and you can definitely feel that - I couldn't last more than two hours without a break. In most cases I don't have more than an hour. The mini XLR cable also protrudes quite far from the sockets and, depending on the sitting position, can hit the neck or shoulder when the head is tilted. Overall I think they were worth the money. I feel dirty saying this because I know that being an audiophile can easily be likened to a placebo disease, but despite everything they brought a new understanding of the music I was already familiar with and spurred me on to one way I thought I would do with it is over.
