Review on Enhanced USB-C Dual 4K Universal Docking Station with USB C Power Delivery - SABRENT DS-WSPD by Thasapon Bowers

Great docking station for Microsoft Surface 4 Core M

Title: I was hesitating between the Plugable UD-3900, the competing Trendnet Dock, and the Microsoft Dock. Concerned that my Core M processor wouldn't have enough processing power to power the USB 3.0 dock, I opted for the Microsoft dock, which many reviewers felt was the right choice for the Surface line . This Sabrent USB 3.0 model came off a flash deal from Revain, and given the ideal form factor it offered, I took a chance. I made the right choice. First, I didn't know where to hide my Surface once I connected it to the dual monitor dock. With the Sabrent, I only have one Surface in the slot (in a Kensington Blackbelt, but with the Type Cover removed) and I actually have a triple monitor setup (although I don't use the Surface monitor as much versus my attached 24 monitor due to its higher pixel density " and 19" monitors). I needed 8 1/2" vertically for my setup, so my 24" monitor is wall mounted and the Sabrent/Surface slides underneath, freeing up a lot of desk space. Surface 4 comes with a mini display. Port and I bought a DisplayLink monitor expecting to use different DisplayLink cables and active adapters and daisy chaining the monitors but my planning wasn't necessary. The USB 3.0 port on the Surface 4 connected to the Sabrent was all I needed; I'm never allowed to use the Mini Displaylink connector on my Surface 4. After installing the Sabrent drivers, I was prompted to go to the Displaylink site for updated drivers. In addition to the correct drivers, they also have a link to an additional "Actual Multiple Monitors" utility which is a trial version. I installed Actual Multiple Monitors and my two extra displays became one extra display. Maybe I could fix that, but I had no intention of buying any software when I set up my Sabrent. I uninstalled it and was able to use my "Ultramon" license that I already had for my Windows 7 32-bit PC and upgrade to Windows 10 64-bit for free (there are other multi-monitor software, some of which are free). I already have UltaMon). Chances are you can get full multi-monitor flexibility just by going with Windows 10 settings, but I don't need that). After setup, I can uninstall Surface for Portable and either the Surface or Sabrent will remember the monitor settings once I dock my Surface 4 back. The form factor (with the notch holding my Surface 4) is perfect for a 2-in-1 tablet/laptop; especially for the surface. The dock's compactness comes at a price - it can get quite cramped when up to six USB ports are pushed together. There are two USB3.0 ports, two regular USB2 ports and two powered USB ports, which are only suitable for powering mobile phones and devices. They don't offer a PC connection (they charge my phone faster than any other charger I have). Up to two monitors can be connected via DVI and HDMI connections. There's also an Ethernet port, although only Wi-Fi works in my setup. In general completely satisfied. Luckily, the Sabrent USB3.0 dock didn't show up in any of my Revain searches, only found it because it showed up in a lightning deal.

Pros
  • 4 USB 3.0 Type-A and 2 USB-C ports for data transfers up to 5 Gbps.
Cons
  • Nothing
