There is another reviewer who accurately describes the shelf as attempting to defy all the laws of physics. Since it's highly rated, I think most people wouldn't mind drilling through the windowsill to keep the shelf from falling off. I refuse to destroy my beautiful carpentry! So I came up with another solution that works great for my 15 lb cat. The metal brackets have rubber bumpers that should rest against the wall. At these points I attached a strong velcro. In order not to measure where on the wall to place the second half I just left both halves glued together. When I was ready to install the shelf, I peeled back the tape to reveal the thumbtack and pressed each Velcro point on the bracket against the wall for 15 seconds. I waited 24 hours before letting my cat use it. Works perfectly! And I saved a lot of money - the shelves that look the same cost 2-3 times more.
