Review on πŸ“š Impressive Industrial Pipe Shelf with Towel Bar: Rustic 24" Towel Racks for Bathroom, 2 Layer Wood Pipe Shelves by Robert Decamps

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Not quite an iron pipe, it's aluminum. It's not actually driftwood, it's just finished to look like it.

SUMMARY doesn't like it but it's overpriced for what it is and the shelves had to be finished top and bottom the same for this type of shelf. In general a nice rustic style shelf. The weight is reduced by the fact that it is not a real iron whistle. Brackets can be iron, not sure. There are clearly no pipes and they are thin-walled. That's both a plus (weight) and a minus (durability and expandability with a standard hose). Very easy to assemble and fairly easy to assemble with a drill, screwdriver and spirit level. It's ideally best to mount it to at least 1 wall stud or lintel rather than just using 16 plastic anchors in the drywall, but I'm sure the anchors are fine as long as you're not placing particularly heavy objects on the drywall. Shelves. - 1 star for value, -1 star for not finishing the bottom of the shelves to match the top and edges. BENEFITS - The overall design suits my application. Works well above a cupboard or as a wall shelf in any room. A lighter (probably aluminum) tube reduces the weight of the entire shelf. With the exception of the bottom fasteners, they cannot be tightened at the correct 90 degree position and be "tight". Cons - The bottom of the shelf doesn't have the same finish/appearance as the top and the edges - a small problem hanging the shelf. where you see the bottoms, not the tops!. You could flip them, but then the tops wouldn't look so great. (-1 star) - Cost: It's too expensive for what it is. But I bought it instead of making it myself because I wanted it fast. But actually, a fair price for this item is around $25-$30 retail for the two-shelf version. Someone is making huge markups on this product. Buying iron pipe parts from REAL iron pipe retail will be much more expensive. (-1 star) NEUTRAL- I was hoping I could adjust the length of the pipes "between the flanges" with regular 3/4" black iron pipe. It's not what it's made of. I think it is actually aluminum with a finish designed for Problem Pipe.As such, attempts to modify the shelf by swapping out certain parts will most likely not work too well from a cosmetic or functional standpoint. This will not mount directly into 2 standard US spacing wall studs , if that's what you want.(i.e. don't use it as a handrail unless you want to be bombarded with items off the shelf.) It's not required, but they should make a model with this feature, you can still do it set it up by inserting 1-2 screws from the top and bottom of a rack on one side and using the wall plugs on the other side. The upside of this design decision is the wider shelf e, which in my case was the perfect site. MY USE / Assembly and Installation The overall design was almost perfect for my situation - I wanted to mount a shelf on a wall that contained a pull out shelf. door, but there was a crossbar over the door. So something that could be mounted to "hang" from a beam, with screws in that beam holding all the weight was ideal. It can be securely fastened directly to the carrier with 8 screws. For my application, the bottom fasteners are a little trickier: they need to be short enough to not scratch the door/prevent it from sliding into the wall, but long enough to "grab" the bottom pieces and in place and hold position. This is also important because the bases cannot simply be fixed and "float” on the wall. In order to install them in the correct position, they are not fully tightened. Assembly only took about 2 minutes after all parts were unpacked. The installation in my case required a ladder to hang it high where I wanted and of course a drill, level and screwdriver. Basically almost as easy to install as ANY wall shelf except it's a bit bulky as it needs to be fully assembled to mark/drill the mounting holes and then held in place. If you have a helper to hold it while marking/drilling, it's easier and faster. Use the level, don't look. (This is a general tip for hanging shelves.) I can polish the shelves to match my bathroom furniture and paint the pipes with Polished Brass Rusty Oleum Metallic Paint to match my plumbing better. If so, I'll post the finished photos. Only one photo of the top and bottom of the shelf so far.

Pros
  • Same as everything before
Cons
  • So-so
