Just plug in and charge. Works perfectly. Our problems were flies, mosquitoes and sometimes mosquitoes/drosophila. We've had this for almost 2 months now. It works great for these problems. He sits on a ledge just outside our back door (but inside). Whenever we go outside to feed and drink our dog, bugs always come to us.
