I ordered this Panasonic cordless phone system to replace a similar older Panasonic system that was wearing out. My wife and I really liked the old system, so we wanted to replace it with something similar. This phone system comes in a smaller box than expected, but the box is well packed and protected from damage. The main base unit, which has an answering machine, is slightly smaller than our old base unit, making for a smaller box. Portable phones are small enough to be carried around comfortably, but large enough to provide enough volume. The system comes with belt clips that can be attached to pocket phones if required. Each phone is powered by two rechargeable AAA NiMH batteries (included) and the system is designed so that the battery in the pocket phones can be used to power the system in the event of a power failure. The autoresponder can easily be switched off. Switch on or off by pressing a button on the base station or on one of the portable phones, depending on your needs. In our case, we have voicemail, so the answering machine is an unnecessary feature. However, I found that by default it's on right out of the box and answers the call after 3 rings. He recorded an unwanted call and the recording was good. You can adjust the message recording duration, and the messages can be easily listened to and deleted. The large digital display shows how many phone messages have been recorded and the light on top of the phone will also flash to let you know there are recorded messages to listen to. Our cats have a habit of climbing on the phone and can accidentally turn on the answering machine by pressing the button on the base. However, you can easily tell if the answering machine is on by seeing if the digital display is lit. The clarity and volume of the voice in the tubes are good. There is no audible noise or disruption in sound quality. The handsets can be used as speakers and also as an intercom system. The base station has an integrated search function that you can use to find your lost handset. Panasonic sells additional handsets that can be connected to the system to increase the number of handsets in your home. However, this is expensive and it is cheaper to simply buy an additional system and connect them together. In our case, between our old system and this new one, we've got five working handsets scattered around the house, which more than meets our needs. All in all, my wife and I are very happy with this Panasonic wireless phone system. It has good voice quality, is inexpensive and very versatile. However, there is a caveat. The phone system uses more numeric codes to program the various actions it can perform. They are detailed in the supplied instruction manual, which should be kept in a safe place for future reference. The manual can also be downloaded as a .pdf file from the Panasonic website.
