Others say it's not really 18 AWG but more like 20 AWG. And to be honest, when I first saw it (before the insulation was removed) I thought so too. But after he undressed, he looked and felt stronger. Then I gently twisted the wires and pushed them firmly into my micrometer. As shown in the picture, its diameter is 0.0450 inches. According to American Wire Gauge standards (which you can easily find with a google search), 18AWG should be .0403 inches in diameter. So thicker than necessary. (It's actually 17AWG, but nobody uses it.) The insulation is a bit flimsy. As can be seen in the second photo, the diameter together with the insulation is 0.0815, which means that the thickness of the insulation is about 0.018. For typical low-voltage domestic applications, however, it is sufficient as long as you do not rub against objects. It is easily removed with standard stripping tools. The wire itself is a tinned copper wire. I bought this to power several motorized Bali blinds around the house with 12v DC power from my attic. They draw a motor starting current of 1A, but a continuous current of less than 0.2A, and only for about 30 seconds while the blinds are being raised or lowered. This will work great for this purpose. (I used the significantly more expensive, higher-quality 16AWG wire for my original set of 8 blinds, but found it to be overkill.)
