No irritation. Do not smear after drying. It only takes at least 2 coats and wears throughout the day - I don't like a lot of length but I do like more volume so it's perfect for me. I get dark, thick lashes that stand out without being overly dramatic or clumpy - be careful though, let each coat dry before applying another and the fewer the better. It's a little weird working with the wand - apart from that the wand is more of a wand than a brush, which is new to me but maybe not to some, so it was a bit difficult to learn not to use the whole thing at first over the eyelids. I would recommend it to others. This is a beautiful dark mascara that adds volume and definition and is easy to rinse off at the end of the day.
