The package does not include a plug, just a USB cable. So you need to buy a plug that can be plugged in before you can use it without batteries. With no plug, it takes 4 AAA batteries to work, which probably won't last long if you turn it on in "Turn" mode. The battery compartment is a bit difficult to access as it is screwed down with a tiny screw perhaps for security reasons. You need a very small Phillips screwdriver to open it. The two "caps", one with stars, the other frosted to soften the light and protect the very fragile acrylic star cap, are very difficult to attach to the base and fairly easy to remove. A white light comes on and it spins, but the colored lights you see in the photo are missing or not working. The package was very poorly made with nothing else inside to protect it from bumps and the package was bent and split when I received it with a disclaimer taped to it from the post office.
