Review on Tosca Narrow Room End Tables by Yamazaki Home - White, One Size by Sharon Watson

This side table is the end of my Yamazaki passion

I've always loved Yamazaki. Her style is very clean and uncluttered, yet so classy in an understated way. I don't have a "normal style", just my usual rhyme of old antiques, books and various favorites from each decade and culture, but I kept adding Yamazaki and enjoyed it. I admire their design, engineering, construction and distillation process. Even the pieces that had to be assembled were fun. Sometimes, following the serial detail drawings, I could catch a glimpse of the "aha” moment. I haven't written or reviewed any more Yamazaki products because to be honest I've been too busy, but I promise I'll be back once our move is over and we've got our home set up. I've always appreciated feedback, reviewers, and the time you've put in. So, after thinking that "everything is perfect with every Yamazaki product", I ordered 2 Yamazaki Home Tosca Narrow Room tables. They're white, with a narrow (yes!) wooden top, and a shelf saves them from hospital tables. I even enlisted my husband's help to put it together after hearing about so many beautiful ones. I knew we had booked tight tables. I knew I was exchanging a large antique table for a narrow modern one. None of them had a problem. Yes, they were uglier than I expected, but I saw too many rooms cluttered with the furniture they contained and wanted as much "space" as we could create. Unlike all other Yamazaki builds I've been involved with, this guide (from the graphic, not the Japanese) was cumbersome and skipped the essential parts of the build. In addition, the company has chosen to use two sizes of screws on the table: tiny and microscopic. Somehow microscopic screws were expected to hold two dissimilar pieces of metal together. We fought for hours until I finally said hell and grabbed 8 small screws that did the job in seconds. I'm not sure why the microscopic screws were so necessary, and even the much larger screws I ended up using didn't show up in the restricted areas, but a few furious kicks at one of the bases did. But even if Yamazaki decided to use the same size screws and wasted time trying to solve these problems, it still wouldn't be enough. The slightly "curved" design was amazing until it became clear that no one had considered that torque. Is that important, especially when trying to drive a microscopic screw through two parts of a structure? If you obsess over this table, plan on using larger screws, maybe as big as the 2nd set of 4. Yes, the table is narrow, but so is 2x4, and I can attach two of those screws. seconds. There are many similar tables, so buy and don't think that the quality depends on the manufacturer of the object, as unfortunately I did. We used up our budget on other purchases but I would make something like a bottom shelf for a plain old wooden bar stool. Thank you again, S. Abe
