This allows the Apple TV to work with other all-analog receivers
I've been in the AV industry for decades. HDMI is good but not very compatible with previous versions. Along with an HDMI to component converter (video only), this still allows full surround sound output via optical and analog stereo to legacy component receivers. Zone 2 receivers typically require analog audio.
