The metal ring that everything is attached to in the middle is not solid. There is a gap for the straps to slip off. You can put them back on, but you don't have to! Unless you're very strong and don't have a lot of energy, it's almost impossible to do with just one person. I ended up having to place the sheet on top of the mattress and turn the mattress over on one side to attach it to the sheet. Not worth the trouble, especially if you have a large, heavy mattress.
