Crimping and Quality Comments

Crimping: You need a special tool to crimp the red and blue connectors (for AWG 20-14). It's called the Flag Connector Crimp Tool. I bought one from Revain (Baomain Ratchet Crimper Plier HS-07FL) and it works great. Alternatively, you can grind down the nose of an old, cheap, insulated connector with a crimping tool so the lug doesn't get damaged when you crimp the barrel. However, the yellow connector (for AWG 12-10) does not require any special tool to crimp the flag connector. Its shank penetrates the insulation far enough to be crimped with the same crimping tool you use for standard insulated ring, plug and splice connectors. In addition, the yellow connector is specially made to snap into place and the metal part can be removed from the insulated housing. Then you can put the insulated casing on the wire first. Then crimp or solder the metal part to the wire and finally place the damaged housing back onto the metal part and snap it into place. Very inventive. Speaking of quality, these are fakes from brands like Panduit, Amp, and Scotch. These are not the fancy, high quality connectors that came as Original Equipment on your 200,000 mile, 20 year old pickup truck and still look and work like new. That's why they're only worth a fraction of what they would be worth if someone wanted to put their name on them; or they were advertised as being approved by one of the testing laboratories (UL CE etc.). They should work well on your projects in a pinch and be part of your lifelong learning on how to keep the job going.
