Dissolve applicator

I bought this applicator in April (6 months ago) this year. I've used it exactly three times. I started using it today and the side used for collecting small gems leaves black marks on my beads. Needless to say I'm not happy. It was kept in my craft box, in the container it came in, so I'm at a loss as to why it is doing this. Is there anyone else who has or has this problem?
