Gets hot in fourth gear too. I don't know if it's safe for animals.

I've only had it for a few days, so I can't comment on the quality yet. But I want to say that it is very, very hot! It was too hot to touch and burned my hands. I had to unplug it and wait for it to cool down. I only had it on the fourth install. It reaches 7. Maybe it's defective? My cat didn't want to do it but now I know why. I'm glad he didn't because he would have burned himself too. Not sure how safe it is because it gets so hot. I think it would be good to use it for animals outside and it's below freezing but I don't know how safe it would be or how you would wire it. I've tried it alone and then with a duvet over a pillow. In any case, the floor was very hot. And the top too. I'm worried my cat will step on the remote control and make it hot. I just don't want anything to happen to my furry baby. In any case, I still test each setting to see how hot it is before allowing my older kitty to use it. He's 19 1/2, has an overactive thyroid and is losing weight. The vet suggested he had arthritis at his age and I agreed. He was recommended a heating pad. He had an electric blanket for many years, but it no longer worked. I thought something like this would be good. After using it for a little longer I'll report back to update my review. I'm not sure yet if I'll get it back.
