These are very strange, very useful items. If you've ever accidentally washed disposable diapers, you know what they do. The leaves come out completely flat and thin. You pour some warm water in a sink big enough to hold one, let it soak for a few minutes, and the little crystals in the bags massively expand, ready to be frozen. You can cut them into arrays of any size you want, so they fit in any lunch box. Do they work as well as blue ice packs? Not really. but that's a different usage. For a small school lunch box, blue ice would take up most of the space and be very uncomfortable. Pre-chilling an insulated lunch box and a cut sheet in the lid will keep lunch cool for 4-5 hours, which is enough for a typical school day. No complaints from my son and they freeze fast enough that even if he forgets to put them back in the freezer they get frozen before school if I put them in when I make him lunch. Very cool, very helpful.
