Ceramic plates. Supplied with silver colored (very light) metal parts including washers for intermediate plates when assembled. The outer box is beautiful. Great as gifts - so I bought two I needed to serve tea treats in the shower and one as a gift for the bride because the box looked like such a lovely gift. I started unpacking my servers and immediately noticed a horrible, musty, overpowering smell. Probably due to the sheer volume of styrofoam packaging, styrofoam is great at keeping horrible smells out. A real mess - not to mention the mess of unpacking. it breaks and swims all over the place. It's fair to say that careful packaging was required to protect the ceramic plates, but styrofoam is so terrible that it's impossible to get rid of in an environmentally friendly way. Also, the fiancee I was planning to gift the set to is a VERY conscientious person. So now I'm torn. I'm thinking of buying a really nice storage box and padding felts between each plate as well - open her set and give her an open but clean, not smelly (was better after a dishwasher) set. *PS - I HAVE MADE AN ADDITIONAL PURCHASE* The ceramic plates are approximately the dimensions listed. There are perforated holes in the design of each panel if that is important to you. They also look "embossed" with a lace print you can feel, so the slabs aren't perfectly smooth. The edges are wavy. The lower part of the plates is smooth, without embossing. Warm white plates. It is used for my purposes but I wish we had a much more sustainable packaging. I always update my reviews when new information seems useful.
