Its biggest advantage is that it keeps liquids warm for so long. I agree that the flip top is uncomfortable as the nose rests against it when drinking. Since I don't use a mug when I travel, the flip top seems overkill to me. An offer for everyone who doesn't need a hinged lid either. Insert a thin screwdriver to the left or right of the flip cover near the pivot point. Carefully pry the fliptop out of the lid, being careful not to damage the small plastic tabs that hold it in place. If desired, you can reattach the flip-top in the same manner. I took off my flip tops and am very happy with my new mugs.
