You have to be very conscientious in the service ie. in treatment and should run it constantly and make sure your water is (usually) chlorinated. Otherwise mold will appear on your filter as stated in the comments. It will naturally become **SAFE** if you leave it wet unattended for a few days. Just in case, I only add a few teaspoons of white vinegar to avoid mold. Any other water-soluble disinfectant will also work, such as H2O2, hydrogen peroxide, etc.
