Both for mistakes and also, eventually, the teeth locking in the buckle end (cut side) will loosen and the belt will start slipping off the buckle, you can extend the service life by re-cutting if you have room. The only reason I'm replacing is because I don't have room to cut any more without making it look mis-sized, and the new buckle will be packed away until the current one breaks. if it even can break (no significant signs of possible mechanical failure).
