Died in a month - memory card accessory

The device worked great the first time it was turned on and used. did a 12 hour backup to a low power 2TB internal SATA drive. rebooted, is not listed on the usb bus. completely dead. I tried it on another machine, it doesn't respond there either. leave it for a few weeks, try again on several machines. still dead
