Innovative design that works great

Genuine Leatherman MultiTool has set the design standard for multi-purpose multi-tools since the mid 80's. Double swing arms covering pliers or scissors and holding a toolbox became the de facto starting point for a generation of multi-tools. The SOG Baton series is a reinterpretation of a multi-tool that suits me very well. There are two more swivel arms (which you'll need for pliers or scissors); however, the swing arms slide together to form a linear rod rather than being folded together to lie parallel. The result is a thin but not too long tool (unless you have very small pockets). The Baton series includes four models: from Q1 to Q4. They're all very well made, but by my standards the Q1 and Q2 are only nominally multi-tools as they don't have a huge range of tools. If you are looking for a complete multi-tool then you have the choice between the Q3 and Q4. I'll talk about the differences between them after talking about the common elements. The in-line folding design has a number of advantages: --> It doesn't take up much space in your bag. The handle is also rounded and the tools fold tightly so nothing can get caught on other things in the bag. --> Handling the components of a screwdriver is a pleasure as the included tool is a bit like a regular screwdriver --> The included case can be used as a kubotan (blunt striking device) for self-defense. It's not that important to me, but maybe someone is interested. --> Looks cool but doesn't affect functionality. I like a good looking multi-tool as long as aesthetics don't get in the way of utility. In this case, the aesthetics improve the functionality of the tool. --> It doesn't look out of place in a professional office environment. The difference between Q3 and Q4 lies in the choice of tool. The black Q4 lever is a ratchet screwdriver. This makes it very flexible and usable as a screwdriver, but not so practical to carry in your pocket because the separate bit holder is almost as big as a multi-tool. Instead of a Phillips screwdriver, the Q3 has a chisel/scraper, a Phillips screwdriver, an awl, and an eyeglass screwdriver. The lack of a screwdriver and ratchet makes the Q3 less flexible as a screwdriver, but it is completely self-contained (ie all tools are included). This made the Q3 the best choice for me as I plan to use it as a pocket EDC; However, if you use your baton primarily as a screwdriver and/or don't care too much about the size and weight of the wielder, go for the Q4. Both are excellent choices. If you're looking for a large, affordable knife, get the Leatherman Skeletool. Q3 and Q4's knife is sharp but small and can be opened with two hands.
