The app is required for full use of the headphones. However, the app will only be installed if location tracking is deployed. Libratone claims they need to track your location in order to update software and firmware. That's a plausible explanation. I have other noise canceling headphones and other phone apps that only update well when connected to the internet. Several other app reviewers point out that this claim is absurd. I suspect the real reason Libratone would want to track your location is so they can sell the data to other companies who use your location to get information about your business. I give location permission to apps that need location data to work properly (e.g. maps and driving directions apps). I'm already getting too many pop-ups about adding advertising services to my phone in my immediate area. I feel uncomfortable giving this data to a company that is so hypocritical about why it needs a permit (having spent six months in Copenhagen I find this duplicity to be very 'undanish' behaviour). I returned the item due to an app issue and didn't try to use the headphones. I suspect the sound quality is pretty good, but the problem is with the app. I previously bought a Libratone Zipp. I've never gotten a direct internet connection to work. Libratone support was poor and I gave up but left Zipp as the sound was good with a Bluetooth connection. Please note that there are several reviews on the Google Play Store criticizing the functionality of the Libratone app and the lack of a legitimate reason for location tracking. I have returned the Track+ headphones and will purchase a similar product from a more reliable company.
