I was hesitant to buy this unit as several reviews said it wasn't bright enough so it's about the brightness. In physics there is a square law that the light intensity of a point source decreases. with the inverse square of the distance, so if you double the distance the brightness is 1/4 and if you triple the distance the brightness is 1/9. The Whellen selfie is pretty bright at 12 inches, but when I mounted it on a 32 inch desktop monitor it's 1/6 bright, which isn't enough so it works for phone mounting but needs for everything else you find a way to set it close enough. Also note that the brightness is adjustable and the warm and cool settings are darker than the normal settings. In terms of photo light sources, this is pretty low and you'll see how the shadows on your face are accentuated. Because of this, serious photographers use umbrella-sized lamps or multiple lamps for more even illumination. An oddity is that in emergency alert mode, "SM S" flashes in Morse code, not SOS. Overall, this works well as a selfie light. It has a generous clip size. Easy to use even without instructions. It can be used as a flashlight for books and you can move around in the dark in a pinch. Any USB-C cable (included) can charge it.
