My daughter needs a Laura Ingalls Wilder costume for a school presentation. She is tall and thin, 9 years old and usually wears size 10/12 clothes. We bought it a size 12 which fits her well (it has room to grow but didn't look too big at all). I was impressed with the quality of the materials. This is not costume material; It feels and looks like a real dress. We bought this and the California Costumes Pioneer Girls Kids Costume (which we bought a medium size since the reviews said it was large). In the end, my daughter decided to keep the California Costumes Pioneer Girls Kids Costume for a number of reasons. :one. The material is very comfortable, feels like pajamas. Although this Scarlet Darkness dress is made from fabric meant to be worn as an actual dress and not just a costume, my daughter was drawn to the softness of the other dress. The other dress has a full apron (covering the bust and waist) attached to the dress. It has a separate waist apron. My daughter just preferred the more closed look and attached apron.3. The hood of the other dress has velcro under the chin and no pleats on the hood so it frames my daughter's face without riding down her forehead. The hood of this dress has to be tied under the chin, which causes the long bows to hang down, which she didn't want. Also, the hat had a large crease down the middle, which caused one side of the hat to hang slightly over her forehead. We struggled to find a way to lift the hat so it wouldn't fall in her face. I could have tried ironing and starching the bonnet to iron out the crease, but since we were deciding which dress to keep I didn't want to do anything with the material until I made a decision. So primarily because of hat and apron. and because my daughter preferred a softer fabric, she chose a different dress. However, she was completely over the moon with both options and ended up making a decision that she felt was a bit petty. She admitted that if she ever tried on one of the dresses without the other, she would be happy with each. dress in the style of the era.
