This lamp is a small power supply that powers multiple SMD LEDs, mounted on a metal base and encased in a plastic case (see photos). The metal plate should provide good heat dissipation for the LEDs. The light feels cheap up close, but it looks nice when mounted high on the ceiling. The imitation of faceted glass on the edge gives it elegance. Most modern surface mount ceiling LEDs consist of an LED strip glued to an aluminum substrate, with the light reflecting off a bright surface through a diffuser. They use constant voltage drivers. This ceiling light is something different. It uses a constant current LED array instead of the usual constant voltage strip. There are design tradeoffs associated with the use of constant current and constant voltage LEDs. But from a consumer perspective, I don't think it makes any difference. This ceiling light is very bright and can be adjusted with one of my regular dimmers. Installation was trivial. You basically unscrew the plastic diffuser, connect 3 wires (hot, neural and ground), mount the metal base plate to the control box with 2 screws, then screw the diffuser back on. My only complaint is that the connecting wires on the lantern are too short, making it difficult to connect the wires with wire nuts and to hold the lantern itself while standing on the stairs. The specification states that these lights have a color rendering index (CRI). ) up to 80+, which I can't test without proper hardware. CRI measures the color accuracy of white light. A higher value means more precision, which may be desirable and important. An example is if you are grilling a steak on the stove and the lighting in the kitchen has low CRI values, you can overcook your steak because it never looks done. "Up to 80+" is a vague description and I don't really know what it means. When I need good color accuracy, I usually look for LEDs with a CRI > 90.
