I purchased this item to buy a ring for my wife. I have measured her current rings but they have expanded a bit and are no longer perfectly round. These measurements are in the range of 17.75 +/- 0.05mm which means the size of the ring is actually round. Since the micrometer (or its modern equivalent, the digital caliper) is relatively cheap ($15-$30), I suggest that you purchase one to determine the size of your existing ring. Your measurements will be much more accurate than buying a ruler. You will also need a conversion chart to convert your measurements to ring size. As an added benefit, you can use your new toy to measure other objects (e.g. the thickness of a sheet of paper).
