That's a great idea, but the cardboard isn't stiff enough to do the job well. The insert that holds the cupcakes in place has notches around each one so you can remove the cupcakes with minimal mess. The problem, however, is that the insert always curves up in the middle. So unless your cupcakes are very large (we used standard sizes), the holder will rise as high as the frosting. I've tried trimming the edges so they don't rise as high, but that didn't help much. The box has the same rigidity, so when you hold the sides of the box, the center of the box flexes down a bit, making the problem worse. be sure it looks good and the recipient doesn't have to be too careful.
