The charger is charging the computer. And as other reviewers have pointed out, the adapter can get quite hot. However, this adapter is DEFECTIVE (possibly due to a flawed design): whenever it connects to my computer, the trackpad and touchscreen behave so erratically that the computer can hardly be controlled. This is a common problem with poorly assembled adapters and is not unique to this product, it is an indication of the quality you are paying for. UPDATE: After a 2-month break-in period, the above trackpad issues resolved themselves. Then the charger finally (literally) burned out after about 8 months. Not too bad for $11 though.
