If you find it very difficult for the grate to slide down the shaft (which I have for all of them), use a utility blade to cut the tabs so the grate sits in the cylinder with friction, but doesn't slide down freely, and seat tighter . I set the bottom flange in a thin layer and press it firmly against the tray, then build it up with a thin layer under the grate and plant it (full support required). Don't forget to protect the rust with masking tape. I cover it with clear tape, turn the grate over and cut off any excess. Then I'll be sure to put all the tape all the way around the edge. Take some time and make sure it doesn't droop or get stuck in the gap where the grout meets the grate. Remove at the end after grouting.
