I have a portable washing machine that I installed on two step stools in the bathroom. The drain is gravity flow so I don't have the usual power to push the water out like most washing machines. My system will very easily stall or slow down dramatically once the lint filter becomes coated, although not necessarily "full". They tend to run out quickly and I have to change mine about once a month. But they definitely keep most of the lint out of my sewer. If you tamper with it while it filters the water, lint can come out, but I don't mind that much. I don't have a typical setup, so I know my problems won't necessarily be yours.
