500 mile update: pump is ok, quiet, coolant temp fluctuates between 81 and 83 degrees celsius at speed according to DME. I would recommend replacing the fan clutch with a Behr unit along with the water pump and thermostat. It seems that all of these components fail at about the same time, and this is easily managed with a pump. Also order the following BMW O-rings: Quantity 2: 11537830712 - Metal hose O-rings Quantity 2: 11537830709 - Thermostat tube O-rings This appears to be a quality part but only time will tell. I do DIY with my machine so it's not that hard for me to pry it out, but if I were using a shop I'd probably buy an OEM pump with a composite impeller. The BMW 3 Series E46 generation has moved to a much stronger composite wheel, so the extra weight of a metal wheel is not required in this generation, unlike the older E36 generation. Heavier impellers wear out the bearings faster.
