Review on Hosim Monster Terrain Control Scale by Mark Young

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Why the main gear wears out

This truck has one disadvantage, which is the rapid wear of the main and drive gears. As you can see in the attached photo, the spur gear is nylon and the teeth are completely worn out. Not only that, but the gears of the motors wore out. When I replaced the motors I also found that one of them was not spinning well. This is after using it maybe a dozen times. With further research I think I found the cause of the problem. As can be seen in the attached photo, the real problem is that the gears are not meshing closely enough with the final drive. This is because the motors are not attached using the motor mounts. As a result, the pinion and spur gear slip and wear each other. I think this is a problem that Hosim could easily solve. I made my own solution which consisted of drilling two holes near the end of the motor gearbox on the outside of the motors. I then ran the wire around the chassis and motors on the outside and twisted the ends together on the inside between the motors. It seems to be working fine so far. I don't think the nylon gear is a problem as long as the gears mesh well. I will update the rating as I have more experience with repairs. I will say the truck is fast and fun to drive as long as it lasts. The scale is not 1:10 but 1:12. I bought a Redcat Volcano as a replacement which is much stronger and easy to fix for little money.
