Excellent hold. Not waterproof.
We bought these boots for mountaineering. The grip was great. When we were in areas with snow, the shoes let a lot of water through. We had to wring out our socks, dry our feet and put plastic bags over our feet for the rest of the hike. I would recommend them for regular hikes. I wouldn't wear them in snow.
