If I want a cold drink, I want ice cubes NOW. I don't have an ice pack. I have several of these steel rocks in a cold jar in the freezer. I take it out and pour in my coke or my orange juice or bourbon or whatever. Instant cold drink. But I've noticed that ice is better no matter how cold the stones are, unless dilution is forbidden. The reason is the phase change. The stones get colder, but they don't transfer the heat extracted from the whiskey as quickly. I have phase transitions. It takes a lot of energy to melt ice, and that energy is the heat of your drink, which is being cooled by dilution. Crushed ice means super cold but super diluted. I like a big cube or ice cube. However, what I love about these stones (or metal) is that when I'm done, I rinse the stones in a glass and immediately pop them back in the freezer. It is so easy. An added bonus is that steel doesn't float, so the ice doesn't rattle against my teeth unless I enthusiastically flip the glass. What I don't like is being overweight. But I'm strong enough to handle half a pound more in my glass. What I don't like is that sometimes I like the intentional slight dilution and added chill of real ice from real ice in, say, Scotch.
