My 2.5 year old son has a very high instep and wide feet. New Balance shoes seem to be the only ones that fit him, and don't cost $50 or more for a pair that he'll outgrow in a few months. We can't fully fit his foot into most shoes, let alone close or zip up the top of his foot. I ordered them in size X and his legs fit easily. You can see how high his instep is as the velcro still doesn't fully close, but his shoe stays on and feels comfortable. Note: Not all New Balance shoes are compatible. We had to bring back another style because even though we ordered the wide one, no amount of cramming would allow his heel to sink into the shoe. Although it's great.
