The pegs that come with most tents are usually suitable for one soil type but not others. My two-man USMC tents came with hollow aluminum stakes, which are lightweight and work well on sandy soil, but in rocky terrain or packed mud, one or more would either bend or snap their heads off. When I retired from the service and started camping my way, I needed a strong stake that would work on any terrain. These inserts are basically oversized nails. They won't flex unless you're using a sledgehammer to pound them into rocks, they're narrow enough to easily drive into any type of terrain and long enough to secure the tent even in loose sand. While the glow-in-the-dark heads don't really light up the surroundings, in the dark of night I can make out the ring of stakes around my tent from 50 feet away. When it comes to weight, I would consider them too heavy for hiking, but I couldn't ask for anything better for car camping.
