They are quite sticky initially, but they sure don't hold any item on a wall or other vertical surface. Of course, I didn't expect them to perform that "too-good-to-be-true" function when ordering them. They're also not for things you need to move on a frequent basis. The repeated usage and exposure to circulating particles in the air (that settle into dust) can quickly render them useless. Finger oils ruin their sticking power, too. No, the same sticking power does NOT return when washed with plain water. It's markedly weaker the second time around, and forget about a third or fourth use; however, it works very well for my computer table/cart (Ebay, Seville Classics Mobile Laptop Desk/Cart) at work, to secure the portable computer and prevent it falling off if the table is jolted. So far, with that use the sticking power has stayed a while, I suspect because the computer largely protects it from air particles and because I only move the computer twice daily. In fact, at the very beginning the sticky pad threatened to pull the decorative layer off the top of the cart! I also use it on the dash in the car to prevent my cellphone flying across the car with every other turn/curve. In the car, I keep most of the pad under its clear protective cover, hopefully extending its usefulness by gradually uncovering only one small (<1 cm) section at a time -- and that's certainly enough stickiness to hold the phone quite stationary, without tearing the phone apart trying to remove it from the pad. The pad also leaves no sticky residue, and so far no melting in the car -- and we've had some scorching hot days in the last two weeks, turning the car into a veritable oven. They do cut to size nicely, if it's a relatively straight cut (not curved). As long as you're selective about its usage and purpose these little sticky pads are quite sufficient for the job.
