How does the color relate to the function of the fountain? I've had these in white for years. Of course, engines burn out after a while, but with proper maintenance they usually last a couple of years. To the buyer who blamed the paint for not being able to see the dirt/slime. These fountains, like any water reservoir, should be cleaned at least once a week. If you have multiple pets, you may need to give them a thorough flush at least two to three times a week. I have several cats so mine gets used a lot. I take it apart and wash it twice a week. This involves taking the entire unit apart, including the motor (one end pops out and you can clean it). Anyone who lets this go for a week or without regular brushing and blames a color or even a product for not working has only themselves to blame. Put out glasses with water. Then, after a day or two, rub your finger over the surface of the dishes. You won't see anything, but you will feel the slime. This is because your pet's saliva got into the bowl. So just think what's up with the fountains! Keep 'em clean boys!
