These are crickets, they can smell, but they are wet dead bugs, so what can you do. My bearded dragon loves them and they are kept on the shelf in case of an emergency if I don't receive my purchase on time. Be sure to keep in the fridge after opening, otherwise they will spoil quickly. All in all, they were a lifesaver for backup power.
